Here's a trick for downloading a whole item as a zip file. We have a process called "zip on the fly" that takes a directory (i.e. a show) and creates a zip for you. So if my show were called 'parker-2005-01-20.1234.flac24', I could download the whole item (show) as a zip like so:

http://www.archive.org/compress/parker-2005-01-20.1234.flac24

Two caviats here:

1) If all you want is a zip of the shns or flacs this is not a *great* solution because you'll get all the mp3/oggs/xml/etc. This doesn't double the size, but could add 50% or so. If bandwidth is a big problem I suggest using ftp and a download manager to just get the files you want easily.

2) OS X (stuffit?) won't open these and tells you they're corrupt. This is not so. Just fire up a shell and use unzip from the command line and all will be good.

Carrini- Have you been successful in downloading whole shows yet.I asked for instructions in english as you did and eventually downloaded the proper programs to convert files to wav The is one for shn files and another for flac files. If you are good, then enjoy what this site has to offer. There is so much great music here once you figure out how to access it.I read some of the suggestions given to you and still and go huh? Let me know if you need it interpreted down to the level I understand. Good luck.

well, i have been downloading track by track for almost 2 years. I tried the winzip and it worked today, easy enough, but after a month i have to buy it. I basically want to know if there is anything besides winzip that is FREE that will allow me to download the whole show (shn or flac via normal http, i confess i don't know what ftp is) at once (i have high speed connection). I dont care about speed, i do it while sleeping at night, i just hate doing it one track at a time. I did not read much on the winzip, just downloaded it (free trial) downloaded the zip file, converted to flac, converted flac to audio and burned. so anyway, if you have suggestions, i woiuld love them, will throw a show your way on me for the help. (are all the shows only in zip file form for downloading entire show,or are there other things i will have to download?)

Windows XP has zip support built in. XP isn't free (or even close to free), but just want to throw that out there.

FTP is the way to go. Easier, more stable, allows you to queue up tons of shows and walk away. It's worth spending an afternoon learning. I bet you spend more time trying to find a free zip program than it would take to download SmartFTP and learn how to use it.

If you are going to spend money, I would go for WinRar over WinZip... Much better program IMO.

The only other program I had to download was to convert shn to wav, but it sounds like you might have that covered. Most of the Dead shows are shn files, so I have to use a coverter regularly. You can find a free DL of it on etree. MKW converter I believe its called. From what I can tell, every show in every form appears to be a zip file, requiring to be unzipped before you can proceed.I dont know if when I upgraded to Windows XP recently if Winzip was included, but is on mycomputer and I never have paid.I'd try to use it as long as it stays up, and worse case try downloading it again. How much is it to DL?

yeah i have the shn mkw tool as well. just assuming that shn will work just like flac for the zip file deal(whole show). its 29 bucks for the year, maybe ill post on etree see if anyone knows, ill let you know. 29 is not bad, but free is better.
